This lecture will provide you with a solid understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, known as the alimentary canal or the digestive tract.  You will learn about the general GI tract signs and symptoms and the diagnostics for GI tract diseases and disorders. The lecture will then focus on the esophagus and its role in digestion.

You will learn about some of the diseases and disorders which affect the esophagus and are most commonly seen in underwriting and how these impact mortality. You will learn about the diagnostic techniques used to investigate signs and symptoms of the esophagus which confirm a diagnosis, as well as any potential complications developing from the disease and disorder and the treatment required to control the symptoms and further progression of the disease.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system and the other abdominal organs that play a role in digestion.
  • Classify diseases and disorders of the esophagus such as GERD, Barrett’s Esophagus and esophagitis which are most commonly seen in underwriting and whether these impact mortality, by learning to understand the signs and symptoms, risk factors, and diagnostic techniques used to confirm a diagnosis, as well as, any potential complications developing from the disease and disorder and the treatment required.
  • Practice your ability to identify favorable and unfavorable characteristics from the underwriting evidence and how to evaluate the information for mortality impact, through case analysis and assessment.
